(1948-1968)
Elliott Robert Smith “Bobby” was the youngest son
of Alvin Russell and Betty Jane (Hitchew) Smith.
He was born in Monroe Co. Michigan, on Friday, December 10, 1948. He had two brothers, Alvin and Jerry, and two sisters Patricia and Catherine.
Bobby was a varsity football player, and was on
the basketball team at Mason High.
He graduated from Mason High School in Erie,
Michigan, Class of 1967. "Elliott was the President
of Teen Town in Luna Pier, Michigan."
In the summer of 1967, Elliott enlisted in the USMC
Echo Co. 2nd. battalion, 4th. marine regiment,
part of the third marine division,
less than a year later, on Monday, March 18, 1968,
PFC Elliott R. Smith, was killed from gunshot
wounds to the neck. He was engaged in action
during a search and destroy mission, against hostile forces in the vicinity of Quang Tri, in the Republic of Vietnam. Elliott Smith was just 19 years old. He had a memorable funeral in Luna Pier, Michigan.
Elliott is laid to rest in
Ottawa Hills Memorial Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio.
